Common External Tariff Implementation

Full implementation of the EAC Common External Tariff with harmonized tariff rates, classifications, and exemption regimes across all Partner States.

Policy Objective

Achieve complete harmonization of external tariffs to create a unified customs territory that facilitates trade while protecting regional industries.

Key Indicators
  • Percentage of tariff lines aligned with CET
  • Value of intra-EAC trade under CET regime
  • Number of exemption categories harmonized
  • Revenue collection efficiency
Regional Status

The EAC CET has been in force since 2005 with three bands (0%, 10%, 25%). A fourth band (35%) was added for sensitive items. Implementation varies across Partner States, with newer members (DRC, Somalia) still aligning their tariff schedules.
